We make our own lavender honey water by dissolving lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) in honey and dispersing the resulting mixture in water. This process creates soothing, moisturising water with antiseptic properties.
Honey contains antibacterial, antiseptic, antioxidant and antifungal substances. It has been used for centuries as a sweetener and in cosmetics. Our lavender honey water is made with French lavender (Lavandula augustifolia) from Provence. Lavender is well recognised for its ability to calm the mind and skin, and it’s one of the most versatile and well-appreciated essential oils.
The early 20th century French chemist, Rene Maurice Gattefosse, once burnt his arm during an experiment and accidentally put it in a vat of pure Lavender oil, thinking it was a vat of cool water. His skin healed quickly with little scarring.
Gattefosse became fascinated by the oil and studied it more closely. He has since come to be known as ‘the father of modern aromatherapy.’ This leads us to believe that the oil may also help to heal damaged or burnt skin.
Honey has been used as a skin ointment for over 2000 years, and was often used to lighten skin and hair because it contains an enzyme that produces small amounts of hydrogen peroxide when diluted.
Honey has been successfully used to treat problematic skin conditions, such as Diabetic ulcers, and it is a traditional remedy for infected acne spots. Honey is also being investigated in the fight against the so-called super bug MRSA.
We have used the gentle lavender honey water in products where its soothing, calming properties are required; it is also an excellent natural moisturiser when the formula calls for lightweight texture. That’s one of the reasons we have included it in our Enchanted Eye Cream. It cares for the skin and locks in moisture.
Traditionally, lavender water has been recommended as an after-shaving tonic, to balance combination skin and to calm sensitive skin. We have used lavender honey water in our Cosmetic Lad facial moisturiser ideal to be used after shaving or when ever the skin needs soothing.
We’ve also used the calming qualities of lavender honey water in our light Vanishing Cream moisturiser.
